Romanian Association for International Cooperation and Development - Asociatia Romana pentru Cooperare si Dezvoltare Internationala
ARCADIA aims at bringing together experts, policy makers, scholars, and practitioners with expertise in Development and Romania’s relations with various parts of the world. A first event of the Network, initiated by Madalina Pruna and Stefan Cibian and organized in cooperation with MEP Corina CRETU and GRSPSociety, was a one day conference organized on the 18th of February 2009 in Brussels. The conference brought together Romanian policy-makers, scholars and practitioners in order to discuss Romania’s approach towards development cooperation and Romania’s relations with Africa.
A concept paper for the development of ARCADIA was created during the PATRIR Spring Academy course on 'Designing Peacebuilding Programs'. The document can be accessed on ARCADIA's ning platform - http://arcadianetwork.ning.com.
ARCADIA participated in the Development Summer Camp organized by MAE and UNDP in September 2009.
During the GRSPSociety 2009 Annual Conference in Boston, a workshop was dedicated to the ARCADIA's development. For 2010 ARCADIA aims at establishing its legal entity and at organizing a Conference on Development, Trade and Foreign Policy.
If you are interested to join the Core Group - i.e. to contribute actively to the development of ARCADIA please contact Madalina or Stefan.

Romania has a goal of spending 0,35 % of its GDP on projects in developing countries beginning in 2011. There is a lot of potential for Romania to make a genuine contribution to the developing world, not just to be a passive EU donor.
The goal of this forum is to facilitate a debate among relevant stakeholders about the position of Romania as a development partner.
This annual forum should bring together important stakeholders (Ministry of Foreign Affairs, FOND, Development NGOs, European policymakers, diplomats, international agencies, development scholars and workers) to debate and contribute to a more transparent and genuine image of Romania as a development partner.

Codrin ArseneI’m a 22 year-old young man living in Chicago, Illinois. I study at the University of Chicago, where I’m majoring in Political Science and International Studies, with a focus on African Politics, trade policies and the impact of international organizations on the world’s governments. I have traveled extensively throughout the world, having visited more then 60 countries so far. I have lived in Romania, the United States of America, Tanzania and Argentina. I’ve also spent several months in Africa, with return trips there every single year. My passion for Africa is rooted in my travels across the continent. From Cairo to Cape Town, Dakar to Mombasa, from Tripoli to Lilongwe, I have visited 24 African countries so far. My main areas of interest in African politics are the impact of Chinese investment in Africa and political failure in Central Africa (the DRC, Sudan, and Somalia). In the past, I have worked with different international organizations (Amnesty International, Peace Child International, the Global Youth Action Network, TIGlobal etc) in areas such as youth advocacy, the involvement of the youth in the process of decision-making and youth diplomacy. I’m currently the administrator of the African Politics Portal where I comment upon the newest political developments on the continent, post news links, and provide my visitors with “briefing news”, “movie reviews”, a “Chinese monitor” and many other options that will help them navigate more easily the current African political scene. I blog on "A Romanian in Africa" (www.codrinarsene.com,) African Politics Portal (www.african-politics.com,) and African Loft (http://www.africanloft.com/author/carsene/) Activity: I am an active member of ARCADIA trying to increase the multilateral ties between Romania and various African countries that have a similar developmental profile. In some cases, such as Tanzania or DR Congo, I'm hoping that the Romanian government will reinvigorate the previous relations that collapsed with the fall of communism.Location: Chicago, United States |
